Water Sports Team

Cheshire Border has a very active water sports team situated in the beautiful grounds of Tatton Park, near Knutsford. Located within the Cheshire Scouts Campsite, the team have a fleet of sailing boats, canoes, kayaks and katakanus all ready for you to go out and ‘Get Wet’. The Get Wet Team run ‘Splash Days’ right through the Spring and Summer for all guiding members from Brownie age to all volunteers and Trefoil members.

We have something for everyone, from sedate and gentle sailing dinghies to more adventurous racing dinghies, sleek modern kayaks to touring open canoes and, for the traditionalists who love a challenge, there are rafts and coracle building. Discover your taste for adventure and join us on Splash Days specifically tailored for your section – all designed for maximum fun and exhilaration.

Getting Involved

Having had a taste of the excitement of a Splash Day, you may want to come along more regularly and join the team. The Get Wet Team are all volunteers from within Girlguiding (and some from scouting!) who have taken the opportunity to develop their skills in the various water sports on offer. You can join the team from the age of 10 and start training for personal awards in paddle sports and sailing, gradually leading to professional Instructor qualifications from the age of 16.

The team are always glad to welcome new members, whether junior or adult, and you don’t even have to get wet! The team relies on many dedicated helpers on land for a variety of tasks, whether registering groups of giggling guides on a Splash Day or keeping the records of team training; everyone is valued. As well as having serious fun, team members gain management skills and professional qualifications which can result in jobs in commercial centres. Team members also benefit from trips out, whether river paddling, windsurfing or sea sailing whilst working towards qualifications.

A Safe Experience

Whatever you choose to do, whether you join us for taster sessions on a Splash Day or join the team to develop your skills, you can expect a safe experience. All instructors are BCU or RYA qualified and follow Girlguiding policy on water activities provision. Buoyancy aids are provided, and all equipment used is inspected and tested annually.

We have a very thorough set of operating procedures and risk assessment which is available to any leader on request as well as being displayed in the hangar on site. Please see the FAQ’s section for further information.
